Madison County Schools Hold Meeting to Consider Reopening Policies Following Governor Beshear’s Recommendation

Many educators statewide once again found themselves in another dilemma yesterday evening, following Governor Andy Beshear’s recommendation to Kentucky schools that they wait to resume in-person classes until September 28th.

The Madison County School Board of Education had previously revealed its plan to have in-person education beginning on the first day of school on August 26th. Madison County Schools’ plan for the upcoming school year also included two additional learning options for students – independent distance learning and virtual interactive learning. These options would see students completing course work either partially or entirely online from their homes.

However, as tensions rise around the divisive issue of sending kids back to school and higher COVID case numbers are being reported, state educators have been urged to once again reevaluate their course of action.

At a recent special called meeting held by the Madison County BOE, concerns held by county teachers were expressed by the President of the Madison County Education Association. A vast majority of MCEA members have been reported as feeling unsafe returning to in-person instruction for the 2020 school year.

This morning, members of the Madison County Schools Board of Education gathered in a meeting to discuss what their policies going forward will be. Board members were not the only individuals who showed up to the meeting, however. A group of local parents and students arrived to the Board of Education office with pre-made signs showing support for Madison County Schools, specifically in their previous decision to offer an in-person education option. Some of the signs had messages such as “Stay the Course” and “Keep Our Options 1 2 3”.

An official decision regarding reopening plans will be made by Madison County Schools later this week.
